The P90x workout regime formulated by Tony Horton consists of a fitness plan and a nutrition plan. The nutrition plan consists of tips and methods to formulate a good diet, which when combined give amazing results! The diet plan is a 13 week program that assists you to lose weight and build muscle when used along with the fitness plan which includes intense training routines.
The P90x nutrition plan includes three phases. The first phase will have the lowest intake of calories by almost eliminating carbohydrates from the diet and having a high protein intake to help building muscles and burning fat. The second phase is the energy booster where two complex carbohydrates are added in the diet which will help you work harder in the intense workouts. Hence, you will have to consume carbohydrates in the form of whole wheat bread, pasta or oatmeal along with a fruit daily. Protein intake should also be high which aids muscle recovery. The third phase is the endurance mixer where carbohydrates are increased further to give you the stamina necessary as the workout becomes more challenging. This is the reason, in all of these phases eating frequent small meals and drinking lots of water is given more emphasis.
In all these phases, dieters have two options from which they can chose what suits them best – meal plan and portion plan. The meal plan will include sample menus with recipes and the portion plan will give you the number of serves of each food type you are allowed to take, by which you can devise your own meal plans. Also, you will have to calculate the recommended calorie intake which is based on your activity level and resting metabolic rate, before starting this fitness and nutrition program.
Throughout the program you are recommended to eat lean meat, eggs, low fat milk and cheese, peanut butter, flax seeds, fresh fruits and vegetables, dried fruits, wholegrain bread and pasta, soy nuts, mustard, salsa, protein bars and fat free salad dressing. Your breakfast should comprise of oatmeal, morning snack with scrambled eggs, lunch should include chicken breast and green salad, afternoon snack with a protein bar and an apple, dinner can have grilled fish and steamed vegetables and finally an evening snack by drinking a protein shake.
